The English golfer Clinches the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Play-Off Battle Versus Tommy Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated exceptional composure to secure the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic playoff after a topsy-turvy last day of competition.
Rai sank a crucial birdie from just over eight foot to seal the win, echoing his sole prior Rolex Series triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a play-off victory against Fleetwood.
Sunday's Play Drama
Rai entered the last day with a single stroke advantage over countryman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He finished with a overall score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, 67 closing round that included seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.
Fleetwood moved one shot clear with two holes remaining after a birdie putt on the 16th, but Rai pulled level again on the seventeenth and then missed a 10-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the final hole.
Play-Off Climax
That set up a playoff at the Yas Links course where the eventual winner prevailed to claim the title and $1.5m (£1.13m) in winnings.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even more individual. To play with him the final two rounds was really special,” stated the winner, the present 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on playing the round and maintaining focus, it’s hard to put into words at the present how it is. It is incredible to be holding the trophy.”
Notable Performances
The Northern Irish star left himself just too much to do, finishing a stroke short in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a spectacular 62 closing round of ten-under. It was his best-ever score on the European Tour, comprising eight birdie putts and one eagle.
The Danish golfer fired six birdies of his as well, but his chances of leading the leaderboard were dented by a dropped shot on the twelfth. English golfer Richard Mansell hit an excellent last round seven-under to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Daniel Hillier.
