The City of Bristol's Backyard Wine Gardens: Grape-Treading Fruit in Urban Gardens

Each quarter of an hour or so, an ageing diesel-powered train arrives at a graffiti-covered stop. Close by, a police siren cuts through the near-constant road noise. Commuters hurry past falling apart, ivy-covered garden fences as rain clouds form.

It is maybe the last place you anticipate to find a well-established grape-growing plot. But James Bayliss-Smith has managed to four dozen established plants sagging with plump mauve grapes on a sprawling garden plot sandwiched between a line of historic homes and a commuter railway just north of Bristol town centre.

"I've noticed people concealing heroin or other items in those bushes," states Bayliss-Smith. "But you simply continue ... and continue caring for your grapevines."

Bayliss-Smith, forty-six, a documentary cameraman who runs a kombucha drinks business, is not the only local vintner. He has pulled together a informal group of cultivators who make wine from several discreet urban vineyards tucked away in back gardens and allotments throughout the city. "I adore the aroma of these vines. It is so evocative," she says, pausing with a container of fruit resting on her arm. "It's the scent of Provence when you roll down the car windows on holiday."

Grant, 52, who has spent over two decades working for charitable groups in war-torn regions, unexpectedly inherited the vineyard when she moved back to the UK from Kenya with her household in 2018. She experienced an strong responsibility to look after the vines in the garden of their new home. "This plot has previously endured three different owners," she says. "I really like the concept of natural stewardship – of passing this on to future caretakers so they keep cultivating from this land."

Terraced Vineyards and Traditional Winemaking

Nearby, the remaining cultivators of the collective are hard at work on the steep inclines of Avon Gorge. "That's how wines were historically produced, but industrial wineries add preservatives to eliminate the natural cultures and subsequently add a commercially produced culture."

Difficult Environments and Creative Approaches

A few doors down active senior Bob Reeve, who motivated Scofield to establish her grapevines, has assembled his companions to pick Chardonnay grapes from the 100 vines he has laid out neatly across multiple levels. Reeve, a Lancashire-born physical education instructor who taught at the local university developed a passion for wine on regular visits to France. But it is a difficult task to cultivate this particular variety in the dampness of the valley, with temperature fluctuations moving through from the nearby estuary. "I aimed to produce French-style vintages here, which is somewhat ambitious," says the retiree with amusement. "This variety is late to ripen and particularly vulnerable to mildew."
