Peak Pizza? Domino's Chief Executive Departs After Pivot Into Fried Chicken.
The boss of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who indicated the United Kingdom might have reached pizza saturation while expanding the franchise into chicken products has been replaced after tensions with its directors.
Leadership Transition
Rennie is leaving after just two years in leadership, and will be succeeded on an interim basis by the organization's chief operating officer, Frampton, while Domino's searches for a permanent CEO.
Rennie, who was with Domino's for a substantial period, had aimed to redirect Britain's leading pizza takeaway chain towards poultry-based products, remarking in a recent interview there was not “significant expansion” left in the British pizza industry. He said poultry was the fastest-growing protein in the world.
Governance Friction
Sources suggest that there was friction between the CEO and the directors over his approach and business vision, although the company's official statement said he was stepping down “by mutual agreement”.
New Product Introduction
In September, the chain unveiled its poultry product line – which the former chief described as a “major strategic shift” for the group – and is piloting it in over 200 locations in the North West region and Northern Ireland.
While the firm is still going to roll it out across its extensive network in 2026 as intended, it views chicken products as an addition to its core pizza business.
Leadership Comment
Bull, the Domino's chair, stated: “We are confident that there are a range of possibilities to drive further growth and performance improvement in the main pizza segment. We are prioritizing selecting the right chief executive to direct the disciplined execution of that growth strategy.”
Market Difficulties
In the latest update, Domino's, which has a substantial customer base in the UK and Ireland, said transactions fell by 1.5 percent in the latest quarter. In the summer, it warned that the quick-service industry had “grown more challenging” as it blamed weaker consumer confidence in the period before the budget and higher payroll outlays for disappointing revenue and a 15% drop in half-year profits.
Other pizza operators are also struggling. Pizza Hut announced the shutting of dozens of outlets a last month, after the company behind its British operations faced financial collapse.
Health Initiatives
Trying to keep up with market shifts towards healthier eating, Domino's has launched lower-calorie items, such as its light base range of pizzas below 400 kcals as well as meat-free and wheat-free options. A family-sized pepperoni has 2,311 kcals. A big margherita has 2,171, while a individual has under 1,000 calories.
Acting Management
The interim chief has been with the company since the recent past, and had a background at the gaming group a well-known operator. It is understood that she is not seeking to take on the CEO position permanently.
Frampton stated: “The company has a multiple current expansion and performance initiatives that we will be concentrating on implementing at speed.”
She added these included ongoing development on the company's logistics network and product development, and its rewards program.
Domino's is also lacking a long-term CFO until March 16, when Andrea starts from the Irish cider and beer maker a well-known firm. Until then, Richard Snow acts as temporary CFO.
