Rob Edwards along with O'Neil are two of the early names under consideration to succeed Vitor Pereira as head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Pereira was sacked on Sunday after the team's 10-match winless start to the top-flight season.
And Edwards and O'Neil - both of who have historic associations to the club - are part of the names to be evaluated by the club leadership.
The manager is currently at another club, which would pose a potential obstacle to his hiring at Molineux.
However the ex- Luton manager - who made over a century of games for the club during his playing career - is said to be a leading candidate for the vacancy.
The 42-year-old is reportedly enjoys backing from the club board as they start the process of hiring a new manager.
Gary O'Neil is also emerging as a surprise contender, even though he would be a surprising choice considering he was sacked by the club in the previous winter.
The ex- West Ham player is currently unemployed meaning Wolves would not need to provide any buyout fee.
