Disputed United States-funded Gaza Humanitarian Foundation Ends Relief Activities
The debated, American and Israeli-supported GHF aid organization announces it is winding down its humanitarian work in the Palestinian territory, after almost six months.
The group had earlier paused its multiple aid distribution centers in Gaza following the truce agreement between Hamas and Israel came into force recently.
The organization attempted to circumvent United Nations channels as the main supplier of humanitarian assistance to Gazans.
UN and other aid agencies declined to participate with its system, claiming it was unethical and unsafe.
Many residents were fatally wounded while attempting to obtain sustenance amid turbulent circumstances near the organization's distribution points, mainly through Israeli military action, according to the UN.
The Israeli military claimed its soldiers fired cautionary rounds.
Program Termination
The foundation announced on recently that it was winding down operations now because of the "effective conclusion of its humanitarian effort", with a aggregate of 3 million parcels containing the equivalent of more than 187 million meals distributed to Gazans.
The organization's top administrator, the executive director, further mentioned the American-directed Civil-Military Coordination Center - which has been established to help implement US President Donald Trump's Gaza peace plan - would be "implementing and enlarging the model GHF piloted".
"GHF's model, in which Hamas could no longer loot and profit from stealing aid, was significantly influential in getting Hamas to the table and establishing a truce."
Comments and Positions
The Palestinian faction - which refutes aid diversion claims - supported the shutdown of the aid organization, according to reports.
A representative of stated the organization should be made responsible for the harm it caused to Palestinians.
"We call upon all worldwide humanitarian bodies to make certain that consequences are faced after resulting in fatalities and harm of thousands of Gazans and concealing the starvation policy employed by the Israel's administration."
Organization Timeline
The GHF began operations in Gaza on late May, a seven days following Israeli authorities had somewhat relaxed a complete restriction on humanitarian and trade shipments to Gaza that lasted 11 weeks and led to substantial deficiencies of necessary provisions.
After 90 days, a famine was declared in the Gaza metropolitan area.
The GHF's food distribution sites in the southern and middle regions of Gaza were administered by United States-based protection companies and situated within Israeli military zones.
Aid Organization Objections
International organizations and their affiliates stated the approach contravened the fundamental humanitarian principles of objectivity, fairness and autonomy, and that directing needy individuals into militarised zones was inherently unsafe.
The UN's human rights office stated it documented the deaths of a minimum of 859 residents seeking food in the proximity to foundation locations between late May through end of July.
A further 514 persons were lost their lives close to the paths taken by United Nations and additional relief shipments, it also mentioned.
The majority of these individuals were fatally wounded by the Israel's armed forces, based on the agency's reports.
Divergent Narratives
Israel's armed services stated its troops had discharged cautionary rounds at individuals who came near them in a "threatening" manner.
The organization declared there were no shootings at the aid sites and claimed the international organization of using "untrue and confusing" statistics from Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry.
Future Implications
The foundation's prospects had been indefinite since Palestinian factions and Israeli authorities consented a truce agreement to execute the initial stage of the American administration's peace initiative.
The agreement stated relief provision would take place "without interference from the involved factions through the UN organizations and their partners, and the humanitarian medical organization, in combination with other worldwide bodies not connected in any way" with Palestinian factions and Israeli authorities.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric stated recently that the GHF's shutdown would have "zero effect" on its activities "because we never worked with them".
The spokesperson additionally stated that while increased relief was entering the region since the truce was implemented on October 10th, it was "not enough to satisfy all requirements" of the 2.1 million residents.
